- In a large saucepan over medium to high heat, combine the apples, water, and lemon juice . Bring the mixture to a boil and then set the heat to low and cover with a lid to simmer. It should take about 10-15 minutes for your apples to become soft.
- Once your apples are soft you can remove the applesauce from the heat. Stir in the remaining ingredients adding additional as needed. Tip: If your apple sauce is too chunky for your tastes, you can puree it through a food processor or strong blender (may have to do batches). Another option is to use a potato masher to mash it down.
- Store your applesauce in a closed container, such as a canning jar , for up to a week in the refrigerator.

Ingredients:
- 5 cups chopped apples (I used Macintosh and Honeycrisp), peeled
- 1 12 ounce bag frozen cranberries
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- Optional: 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
How to cook:
- Add apples, cranberries, cinnamon, cinnamon stick, orange juice and ¼ cup water to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to simmer as the apples break down and the cranberries pop.
- Add maple syrup, if sweeter sauce is desired. Simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Apples will break down and you’ll be able to mash them with a spoon.
- Allow to cool before serving. Enjoy!

- 1/2 cup water
- 1 lemon Juice of one lemon
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp vanilla bean powder (liquid vanilla works too)
- 1 cup chopped plums, washed, pitted (added to basic applesauce)
- 1 tbsp allspice (instead of cinnamon)
- 1 cup fresh cranberries (added to basic applesauce )
- 2-4 star of anise (instead of cinnamon)
- 2 cups chopped pears, washed, peeled (added to basic applesauce)
- 1 tbsp ginger (instead of cinnamon)
How to cook:
- Place all ingredients in the slow cooker and give it a good stir.
- Turn the slow cooker to high for 4 hours or low and slow for 6-8 hours. You will want to stir the apple’s every 2 hours based on the cooking method you use.
- If you like it a little chunky you can be done here. If you want that smooth store bought texture, uses a hand-immersion blender or let is cool slightly and transfer to a blender and process until the sauce is smooth.
