Hush puppies are the perfect addition to a classic fish fry! Crispy fried dough balls that go perfectly with a sweet or savory dip and some fried fish.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup self rising flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 small onion (finely diced)
  • 3-4 green onions (finely diced)
  • 1 cup buttermilk OR 1 cup regular milk PLUS 2 tsp distilled vinegar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cup of oil for deep frying
How to cook:
  1. Combine the cornmeal, self rising flour, sugar, salt, cayenne pepper, and garlic in a large bowl.
  2. Whisk until everything is lump free then toss in the diced onions.
  3. Add in the buttermilk ( or substitution), and egg.
  4. Mix the ingredients until well combined, but don't over mix.
  5. Pour the oil into a large pan, and heat the oil over medium heat.
  6. Once the oil is nice and hot, start spooning it the batter.
  7. Fry the hush puppies until the are nice a golden brown.
  8. Remove the hush puppies from the oil, and place them on a paper towel lined plate.
  9. Serve and enjoy!

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to cook:
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Spray cups of mini muffin pans with nonstick vegetable spray.

  5. Beat eggs, milk and oil in small bowl.
  6. Add to cornmeal mixture and stir just until blended.
  7. Spoon batter into prepared muffin pan, filling cups 1/2 to 2/3 full.
  8. Bake until golden, about 15 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
  9. Serve immediately.

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup flour

How to cook:
  1. Heat at least 2" of vegetable oil until hot. Be careful not to over heat your oil or it will instantly burn your batter. I do a medium low to start and adjust as needed.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking soda and salt.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and add buttermilk, oil and egg and mix batter well.
  5. Stir in both kinds of onions.
  6. Spray down a 2 tablespoon portion scoop with non-stick cooking spray.
  7. Scoop and then drop dough into hot oil and fry for 5-7 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. The batter may spread a bit when you drop it so I reshape with tongs as its cooking. Simply use your finger to dole out the batter from the scoop into the hot oil.
  9. Turn hush puppies frequently to evenly cook on all sides.
  10. When finished cooking, place hush puppies on paper towel for oil to drain and serve warm.
