How to cook:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon and nutmeg together until well combined.
  3. Pour in the melted butter and stir using a spoon (or your hands) until it comes together and starts crumbling into smaller pieces. Set aside.
  4. Thinly slice your apples (I like using my trusty apple-peeler-corer-slicer device, but a knife will work too). You can keep the peels on or remove them, either way works.
  5. Lightly grease your 8x8 pan using cooking spray or butter.
  6. Place apples in pan then sprinkle toppings over apples. It will seem like there is too much crumb topping as it can heap over the top, however it will bake down and be just perfect.
  7. Make It Now
  8. Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes, or until crisp topping is golden brown and you can see or hear the cooked apples bubbling inside. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes then serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and optionally some salted caramel sauce.
  9. Freeze It
  10. After adding the apple crisp topping over apples, cover with several layers of plastic wrap. Then cover with foil. Write the cooking directions on the foil and freeze.
  11. To Cook From Frozen
  12. Simply remove frozen apple crisp from freezer, remove plastic wrap and foil, replace foil.
  13. Bake covered in 350°F oven for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake for remaining time of 40-55 minutes or until crisp topping is golden brown and you can see or hear the cooked apples bubbling inside. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes then serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and optionally some salted caramel sauce.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Yields: 6 servings
Cuisine: American
Number of ingredients: 11
Ingredients:
  • 12 tbsp (185g) salted butter, at room temperature (see note below)
  • 2 cups (250g) all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup (135g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 -1 tsp ground cinnamon, optional (I usually don’t add cinnamon for this recipe)
  • Pat of salted butter, for coating the pan
  • 2 lbs (907g) or about 5 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into 1 1/2- inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • If not using salted butter, add 1/4 tsp fine sea salt to the crumble topping.
  • The crumble topping yields about 4 cups (lightly packed), which is enough to fit (2x) 9×13-inch baking pans. For this recipe, you’ll only need about 2 cups. Freeze the remaining 2 cups for another crumble. Directions below.
  • For individual portions, you can fill up to (12x) small ramekins.
How to cook:
  1. Add the crumble topping ingredients to a large bowl. Squeeze together by hand until crumbles start to form and the flour is no longer visible. The mixture should feel like wet sand when ready. Set aside. Alternatively, if not using right away transfer the crumbles to zip-top bag (lay it flat) or an airtight container and freeze, up to 3 months. Use directly from frozen.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter. Alternatively, butter up to (12x) small individual ramekins.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the apples with the sugar and cinnamon. Add to the baking pan. Top with about 2 cups of the crumble mixture, adding more if preferred. If using ramekins, fill the cups about 3/4 full with apples and then top with crumbles; the apples will shrink slightly when baked.
  4. Bake the apple crumble for about 30-40 minutes or until the topping is perfectly golden brown. Check at the 30 minute mark if using ramekins.
  5. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or creme fraiche.
Notes: Apple Crumble / Apple Crisp (Super Easy), Assemble in a 9"x5" loaf pan. Bake for 20 min with foil on, then remove and bake for a further 30 to 35 minutes until the topping is golden
