  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 chocolate Hershey bars (regular size)

How to cook:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x13 baking dish with baking spray.
  2. In a a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix in the buttermilk, coffee and oil until combined. Beat in the eggs, one at a time until well mixed.
  3. Pour the batter into the baking dish and bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
  4. Chocolate Frosting
  5. Using a standing mixer, beat the butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy whipping cream and vanilla until combined and fluffy.
  6. Scoop about 1 cup of the chocolate frosting into the piping bag and set aside. Scoop the remaining frosting onto the top of the cooled cake and spread evenly

  • ⅔ cup unsweetened Hershey’s cocoa powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder

How to cook:
  1. Chocolate Cake
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with baking spray (Baker's Joy or generic version). Set it aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. Whisk in the salt and granulated sugar.
  5. Whisk in the buttermilk, vanilla extract and oil.
  6. Whisk in the eggs, 1 at a time, until well incorporated.
  7. Carefully whisk in the boiling water until all the ingredients are combined. The batter will be thin, but it is supposed to be.
  8. Pour into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes away clean. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  9. Chocolate Frosting
  10. Using either a stand mixer or medium-sized mixing bowl and a handheld mixer on medium-high speed, beat the butter and vanilla for 30 seconds.
  11. Add the cocoa powder and continue mixing until well incorporated.
  12. Add the milk and continue mixing until combined.
  13. Lower the mixer speed to low and add the powdered sugar. Once the powdered sugar is no longer “dusty”, increase the mixer speed to medium and beat for 1 to 1½ minutes until fluffy.
  14. Using either a silicone spatula or an offset spatula, evenly frost the top of the chocolate cake. Slice twelve 3-inch by 3½-inch slices.

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Frosting:
  • ½ cup butter very soft/melty
  • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
How to cook:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or a 9x13 pan.
  2. In large bowl mix sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in boiling water. Pour batter into prepared pans.Batter will be very thin.
  4. Bake 30 to 35 minutes for two round pans or 35-40 minutes for a 9x13 pan.
  5. For the frosting, combine butter, cocoa, powdered sugar and vanilla together, slowly add in the milk. If it's too thin add a spoon full of powdered sugar or too thick add a spoonful of milk, until you get a nice spreadable texture.
