Instant Pot Split Pea Soup with Ham
This Instant Pot Split Pea Soup is made with a leftover ham bone (or any ham you have), for a super easy, freezable weeknight meal! The pressure cooker cuts the cooking time in half.

Ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 2 ribs celery (diced)
  • 2 carrots (diced)
  • 1 ham bone (a smoked ham hock or 6 oz. diced deli ham can also be used)
  • 1 lb. dry split peas (sorted through and rinsed)
  • 6 cups low sodium chicken stock/broth (or veggie stock, water, or a mixture)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • kosher salt and black pepper ((see notes))
  • chopped fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

How to cook:
  1. Turn pressure cooker to the "sauté" setting. Melt butter (3 tablespoons) and sauté onion, celery, and carrots for about 5 minutes, until softened.
  2. Add the split peas, chicken stock (6 cups), ham bone (or hock or 6 oz. diced cooked ham), and the 2 bay leaves. Turn off the "sauté" function.
  3. Cover pressure cooker and set to manual, high pressure for 15 minutes.
  4. Allow the pressure to naturally release for 10-15 minutes. Then, quick release the pressure valve.
  5. If you used a ham bone or hock: remove the it from the soup and remove the ham meat that's still attached to it. Add the ham meat back into the soup.
  6. Taste and season with salt and pepper if necessary (see notes). Serve immediately, or store in your refrigerator for up to 1 week or freezer in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

  • 2 cups dried split peas sorted and rinsed
  • 6 cups vegetable broth or 6 cups water plus 2 vegetable bouillon
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 medium carrots diced
  • 2 ribs celery chopped
  • 1 medium potato chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes

How to cook:
  1. Add all the ingredients in the Instant Pot. Cover Instant Pot and set the pressure release valve to Sealing. Select the Pressure Cook or Manual setting and set the cooking time for 15 minutes at high pressure.
  2. Let the pressure release naturally for 20 minutes. Move the Pressure Release to 'Venting' to release any remaining steam. Open the pot and stir and serve!

  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 1 large onion (any color)
  • 2-3 stalks celery (yields 1 cup)
  • 4-5 large carrots (yields 4-5 cups)
  • 1/2 lb. ham (yields 2 cups diced)
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 1/2 cups green split peas
  • 5 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • fresh chives or herbs for garnish (optional)

How to cook:
  1. Mince 6 cloves of garlic and 1 large onion (any color).
  2. Chop 2-3 stalks of celery and 4-5 large carrots.
  3. Chop 1/2 lb. of ham into small cubes. (Leftover roast holiday ham or pre-cooked ham steak are great options).
  4. Rinse 2 1/2 cups of green split peas in a colander to remove any dirt or impurities.
  5. Turn the Instant Pot On and set it to 'Saute' mode. Once it's heated add 2 Tbsp. of olive oil.
  6. Add the minced garlic, onions, and celery to the Instant Pot and saute for 2-3 minutes, stirring often.
  7. Add the chopped carrots, along with 1/4 tsp. kosher salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper. Saute for 4-5 minutes, stirring often.
  8. Add the diced ham and saute for another minute or two, stirring often.
  9. Add the rinsed split peas and saute for another minute, stirring until all of the ingredients are combined.
  10. Add 5 cups of low sodium chicken broth and stir until combined.
  11. Once everything is in there place, the cover on top and make sure it is in the locked position and that the valve it sealed. Press the ‘Cancel/Off’ button and then press the ‘Manual’ button. Set the timer for 15 minutes.
  12. Allow the Instant Pot to pressurize, cook for 15 minutes, and when the 15 minutes is up allow the steam to release naturally for 10 minutes. Feel free to flip the vent after 10 minutes to release any extra steam. At this point you can remove the cover from the Instant Pot.Turn the Instant Pot off and unplug it when finished.
  13. To Serve: Garnish the soup with minced chives or any type of herbs you like and serve with crusty bread or garlic bread (use gluten free bread if GF).
