Total time: 135 minutes

Prep time: 120 minutes
Yields: 10 servings
Number of ingredients: 11
Ingredients:
  • 1 large onion
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 t. oregano
  • 1 t. garlic powder
  • 1/2 t. cayenne pepper
  • 1 t. paprika
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. pepper
  • 1/2 t. vegetable oil
How to cook:
  1. 1. Cut onion into a blossom shape. Cut the end off one end of the onion, then make 8-12 cuts around the perimeter of the onion, opening it up. Cut out the very center of the onion so the petals fold out.
  2. 2. Soak onion in ice water for at least 2 hours.
  3. 3. Meanwhile prepare the breadcrumb mixture and the egg wash.
  4. 4. In a medium bowl combine the breadcrumbs and spices, mix.
  5. 5. In another medium bowl, combine eggs and milk mixture and whisk well.
  6. 6. After onion has soaked, take it out of the ice water and onto a plate. Coat onion with egg wash. You can use a baster if you have one or use a spoon.
  7. 7. Once the onion is completely covered in egg wash, add the panko breadcrumb mixture. I used a sifter. You can use your hands to pat the breadcrumb mixture onto each of the onion “petals” until they are all covered.
  8. 8. Add 1/2 t. oil to the bottom of the Airfryer.
  9. 9. Then put the onion on the baking plate.
  10. 10. Optional – Cover the onion with a layer of aluminum foil to keep the edges from browning too much.
  11. 11. Set the AirFryer temperature to 400-degrees for 10 minutes.
  12. 12. Check the onion after 10 minutes to see how it’s cooking. The onion will take a variable amount of time, depending on how big it is.
  13. 13. Put the onion back in the Airfryer for another 5-10 minutes and check it. I cooked my onion for a total of 20 minutes because it was very large. Also the edges of the onion get very brown. If you don’t want them to get too brown, cover the onion with tin foil, creating a tent over it.
  14. This recipe was created using the Philips Airfryer, Compact Version (HD9621)

How to cook:
  1. Heat air fryer to 400 F.
  2. Cut off the top of the onion so you can place the knob end on top (so the onion will not roll away). Peel the onion. With the root side up (knob end), cut into quarters cutting to about 1/2 inch from stem. Cut each quarter into thirds so you make thin strips of onion (being careful to continue to cut 1/2 inch from the stem so the onion stays together).
  3. Combine flour, garlic powder, salt, and paprika in a small bowl. Place onion in a small bowl and sprinkle with flour mixture as you pull apart the wedges. You want to try to coat all the petals of the “flower”. Dump excess flour out of onion bowl and mix in cornmeal.
  4. Beat eggs with 2 tablespoons water and brush all over the onion. Sprinkle with the flour-cornmeal mixture trying to cover all of the onion and its petals.
  5. Spray the air fryer basket with non-stick spray and cook for 10 minutes or until onion is crispy.
  6. Mix yogurt, mayonnaise, horseradish, and ketchup in a small bowl. Serve alongside the cooked onion.

How to cook:
  1. Peel and cut the sweet onions into medium-sized wedges, keeping the wedges similar in size for even cooking. Pull apart the wedges that have more than one onion layer so each wedge becomes a single piece of onion.
  2. In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the milk, white vinegar, and eggs. Mix until blended and smooth. In another medium sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Stir well. *Use 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper for milder breading and 1/2 tsp for a spiced breading.
  3. Working in batches, coat the onion pieces in the flour and cornmeal mixture. Transfer to the milk and egg batter, stirring to thoroughly coat them. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the onion back to the cornmeal and flour mixture, shaking off excess liquid. Stir well to coat thoroughly in the breading.
  4. Spray the air fryer basket generously with cooking oil. Transfer the breaded onions to the basket, arranging them in one layer and not touching. Spray generously with cooking oil so each onion is completely covered in oil.
  5. Set the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204°C) for 12 minutes. Flip the onions halfway through and spray again with cooking oil. Continue air frying until a deep golden brown, increasing the time in 2 minute increments if not done at 12 minutes. Use tongs to carefully remove onion petals from the air fryer to a serving plate.
  6. While the onion petals are air frying, make the dipping sauce. Combine all sauce ingredients in a small serving bowl and refrigerate until onion petals are ready to serve.
